Meghan McLoughlin

Embrace UT PROSIM as a way of life

Meghan McLoughlinMeghan McLoughlin came to Virginia Tech undecided about what she wanted to study and what she wanted to do following graduation. One thing she knew for sure, though, was that she wanted to be a Hokie.

She said, “When I came to visit, I was immediately struck by how much people love this school. You can just feel the commitment to community service. At other colleges, it’s a focus, but here, it’s a lifestyle. I love that.”

A sophomore studying applied economic management, Meghan is a University Honors student. She’s minoring in statistics, crop and soil environmental science, and, because this girl just can’t get enough of learning, she’s minoring in French as well.

Meghan said she stumbled into her major, and the field of agriculture is entirely new territory for her. But, she said, “That’s what this whole college thing is all about. You have to understand that to get to where you want to be in life, you have to be comfortable diverging from normal paths.”

It was that deviation from her comfort zone that set Meghan up with a passion previously untapped. She said, “Through my classes, I’ve come to discover how dynamic agriculture is and how much potential it has to change the world. It’s how we’re going to feed the generations of the future.”

From her studies, Meghan became passionate about hunger relief. She started to realize that just outside Virginia Tech’s campus, the New River Valley is suffering from hunger. She said, “There are people in need, and it’s real.”

Meghan didn’t hesitate. She immediately started to make plans for a canned food drive in the Honors Residential College to benefit the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry. Called “The 200 Can Campaign,” Meghan initially set out to collect 200 cans from her peers. She raised over 300. This year, she recreated the drive, with a new goal. “The 400 Can Campaign” went above and beyond, and 769 cans were donated.

She said, “The spirit of Ut Prosim is so contagious around here, so I felt that, as a Hokie, it’s something I needed to tap into. The best way I could do that was to fuse that larger school culture with my personal passion. I’ve been able to take my personal interests and combine them with what I’m learning here at Virginia Tech to make an impact on the world. It’s something I want to continue to hone for the future.”

In addition to the food drives, Meghan also helped to coordinate an Oxfam Hunger Banquet in the HRC that facilitated an educational conversation about global hunger and collected more supplies for the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry. She organized a fundraising event for Relay For Life, was a participant in Leadership Tech, and is a member of the HRC Service Initiatives Committee.

Her nominator said, “Meghan does all of this and more without any formal leadership role or request for recognition. She simply believes her contributions are the right thing to do, and her gracious approach to service and life is inspiring to others.”

Meghan credits her drive and passion to mentors, both in and out of the classroom, who have helped her practice introspection and encouraged her to stretch the preconceived notions she has of herself to their limits.

Her nominator said, “If we had more students like Meghan, Virginia Tech and our world would truly be a better place.”

For her selfless service and for the wisdom to use her strengths to better the world around her, I’m honored to present the Aspire! Award for UT PROSIM to Meghan McLoughlin.
