Jaclyn Abramson

Practice CIVILITY

During her first year at Virginia Tech, Jaclyn Abramson travelled to New Orleans on an interfaith community service trip as a member of Hillel, a Jewish organization on campus. The opportunity to partner with students of different faiths and ethnicities while working toward a common goal became the highlight of her Virginia Tech experience and the foundation on which she began to practice civility.

Jaclyn is a senior from West Chester, Pennsylvania studying animal and poultry science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She has a love for animals, agriculture, and community, and she hopes to attend veterinary school in the future. Through pursuing these interests, she’s developed her top strength—Input—and discovered a passion for fostering respect. “I have noticed that miscommunication and misinformation is one of the main reasons people feel overlooked,” she said. “My passion is helping to find a way to overcome these obstacles so that respect will be a common characteristic in everyone’s lives.”

Her nominator described Jaclyn as naturally humble and having a positive outlook, a sense of personal responsibility, a passion for social justice, and a willingness to share her skills with others. Her nominator wrote, “Jackie seeks peace and pursues it in herself and in others. She is able to bring groups together and revitalize organizations as a team.”

Jaclyn is proud of the confidence she has gained through embracing opportunities at Virginia Tech. “I strived to make the best out of the experiences and encounters I’ve had,” she said. Her advice to others: keep an open mind and heart. “Everybody has a unique perspective and story,” she said. “You can broaden and strengthen your ideas and strategies by learning from each other.”

Her nominator wrote, “As the Vice President of Social Justice for Hillel at Virginia Tech, Jackie strives to inspire and create a civic-minded community in all forms. Her down-to-earth demeanor genuinely lets those in need know that she is there to understand, empathize, and help in whatever way is needed.” It’s fitting that one of her top five strengths is empathy.

Jaclyn said, “I am a soft-spoken person, but I try my best to make sure that everyone I encounter feels understood and valued. I’m grateful for every interaction and opportunity I’ve had, as they have given me the ability to grow and help me get to where I am today.”

For your dedication to engaging respectfully with others—especially those who are different from you--and your commitment to seeking peace within yourself and your communities, I am thrilled to present you with the Aspire! Award for CIVILITY.
