Amy Chen

Pursue SELF-UNDERSTANDING and INTEGRITY

Some necessary conversations are difficult to engage in – particularly when they involve a valued friend.

For the past two years, Amy Chen has been a student leader in the VT Engage STEP UP program, where she has been able to re-define her concept of community service and social justice. Amy has worked to understand the social issues and communities she works with. She continually asks questions to discover the root causes of the problems they face, to gain a more holistic understanding of the issues.

Amy was recently taken aback when a friend developed a GoFund Me page for a mission trip to Nicaragua. In the description, her friend talked about throwing candy in the streets, and how the individuals of the community would come running after the truck in hopes of catching something they desperately needed. The language Amy’s friend used depicted a savior mentality, as if the community would not survive without the help of the missionaries. Amy wanted to help her friend to think more critically about the language she was using. Amy engaged her friend in a conversation, not in a patronizing way, but instead she talked about how she herself became more educated on this very topic. Amy discussed how she, too, had to relearn what service meant and how to be an active citizen for service in her community. Amy was persistent. Finally, her friend understood and started her own journey in redefining service and social justice.

Her nominator said, “While this may have been a tough experience for Amy, I know she is ready to engage in many more difficult dialogues throughout her life. It takes much more courage and integrity to stand up to those you are closest to than anyone else.”

Amy is well prepared for meaningful conversations because one of her passions is to listen. She said, “I enjoy listening to others talk about their day, and I enjoy being there for people who could use a little bit of Amy. Ranging from rants to small talks, I like the fact that I can be someone others can ask for advice. It makes me feel like I am valued, and in return, I want others to know that they are also valued, loved, and appreciated in every way possible.”

Amy is the first in her family to go to college. She is a junior double majoring in Biological Sciences and Psychology. A Dean’s List student, teaching assistant, and scholarship recipient, Amy hopes to continue her education to become a physician’s assistant because, she said, “I see it as one of the best ways I can give back to the community by using my knowledge and abilities.”

For being aware and attuned to the social issues and injustice in our society, and for helping others redefine their thinking about service, I am pleased to present the Aspire! Award for Self-Understanding and Integrity to Amy Chen.
