Organizations and Involvement

Is there any kind of leadership training I can get involved with after arriving on campus?

Aside from residential- and college-focused training, there are a number of opportunities. The Leadership Development Office in Student Activities offers workshops, retreats, and programs to facilitate leadership-skill building. There is even a four-year program named Leadership Tech in which students work within their class level in cohorts of 10 to 12 students.

How do I find out about student organizations?

There are a few ways to learn about a student organization:

  • For general information, students can pickup a list from Student Activities in 319 Squires Student Center. The list features all of the 600+ organizations that were registered as of the prior semester.
  • For specific information, students can go to the Student Organizations website and search our up-to-date data base. Searches can be made via keyword, organization name, activity, or organization type. Students are encouraged to attend the Student Organization Showcase on the first Friday of classes in the fall semester. There are over 300 organizations in attendance at this Hokie Hi event.
  • For professional assistance, students can make and appointment with a Student Activities staff member or just drop by.

*Coming Soon: Student Activities is currently testing a new organization-matching program named BranchOut. Visit www.branchoutvt.com to test it out and to learn more about how to get matched based on your individualized information.

How do I find out what is happening on campus?

With 600+ student organizations, the Virginia Tech Union (campus programming board), and Student Government Association, there are more student programs and events at Virginia Tech then most people can keep up with. To find out what is happening, students can turn to listserv messages, fliers, friends and RAs, table cards in the dining centers, the Collegiate Times and the Virginia Tech Calendar.

In what semester may I join a fraternity or sorority?

Virginia Tech requires that students must complete 12 credit hours at Virginia Tech with a 2.0 or better grade point average to be able to be initiated. The Interfraternity Councils allow first-year students to pledge in their first semester; however, they may not be initiated until the second semester. Many chapters require a higher GPA than the university requirement.

Do I have to live in the chapter house and what are the costs associated with membership?

Each chapter has different requirements and costs. This is a question that each potential member should ask while deciding which fraternity or sorority he or she would like to join.

Will I be hazed?

Virginia Tech has a zero-tolerance policy for hazing. If a chapter is found responsible for hazing, the university removes the chapter, as well as the hazors and hazing subjects.
