What resources are available to me if I am trying to make a decision about my academic major or career options?

Most students find it frustrating to determine what to major in and what career to pursue upon graduation. The ideal is to ultimately identify a few good career paths and then decide which academic majors support those options. The key is self assessment (skills, values, interests, personality) and great information about occupations. Career Services has career advisors, career resources, self-assessment materials, classes, and programs to assist with these critical decisions. Take a look at the Career Services Career Planning website, and then call to make an appointment with a career advisor at 231-6241.

How important is it to have career-related experience before I graduate?

According to surveys conducted by Career Services and others across the country, the No. 1 criterion that employers look for on college student resumes is career-related experience. In addition, they are interested in academic major, GPA, leadership, communication, teamwork, and technical skills. Virginia Tech students have so many opportunities at their fingertips to compete in the job market with career-related experience: the Cooperative Education (Co-op) and Internship Program, the Externship Program, on-campus interviews with companies hiring students for the summer or during the school year, job listings, a career fair exclusively for employers hiring interns and co-ops, internships and/or field studies for credit through many academic departments, leadership roles available through student organizations, service-learning opportunities through courses, and opportunities to volunteer.
