Fall Family Day 2012 Success
The Division of Student Affairs thanks all of the families, volunteers, and donators for making Fall Family Day 2012 a resounding success. The event saw more than 1,200 people take part in dozens of activities on campus and in the surrounding area, requiring 50 volunteers throughout the day. Of those volunteers were students from the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management who worked with the Communications and Marketing Department to put on the day’s events. As part of their class requirement, the students served as student managers for every event.
Around 30 families participated in the Hokie Challenge, while others explored all that Lane Stadium has to offer. Welcoming families to Squires Student Center were four a capella groups, the HokieBird, Abe Lincoln, and Patricia Perillo, Vice President for Student Affairs. The competition at the annual cornhole tournament was fierce and friendly between the 40 teams and tons of prizes were given out at the tailgate, most notably, a football signed by Frank Beamer.
Free food was provided by firehouse Subs, Panera, and Starbucks. The President’s Wine and Cheese Reception included cheeses provided by Kroger and wine samples donated by the Office of the President with additional food provided by Professional Catering.
During the spring semester, a larger, three-day event surrounding Relay for Life and the annual Virginia Tech spring football game will provide another fun weekend for all Hokies and their family members. Spring Family Weekend will be held April 19-21, 2013.
Family Day is sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and a grant from the Virginia Tech Parents Fund.
