Americans with Disabilities Act

The Director of University ADA Services from Human Resources will explain the requirements of the ADA as a federal civil rights law.  This presentation is designed principally for pre-professional courses and students who will deal with ADA requirements in their professional lives (e.g., architects, engineers, educators, business managers, and human resources).

College Students and Depression

Depression is a mental disorder that affects an estimated 10 percent of college students. This program will explain symptoms of depression and discuss distinctions between someone who is feeling down in response to some life situation versus someone who is suffering from clinical depression. Participants are given information on how to get help from professionals at the Cook Counseling Center. This presentation is led by Peer Assistants for Learning.

Contraception Choices Education

This presentation covers information about a variety of contraceptive methods, as well as strategies to evaluate them as an informed healthcare consumer.  Depending on class size, either a lecture or an activity/discussion format can be used.

A Conversation with Students With Disabilities

A panel of students will discuss what it's like to live and study at Virginia Tech with a disability.  A staff member from the Services for Students with Disabilities Office will moderate the discussion.

Deafness 101: What You Always Wanted to Know About Deafness or Deaf Culture and Now Have an Opportunity to Ask

How to Eat Healthy For the Rest of Your Life

It's never too late (or too early) to begin a lifelong habit of healthy eating.  A registered dietitian will discuss tips on how to eat healthy on campus and how to make the changes needed now to ensure a lifetime of healthy eating.

How to Refer a Friend to the Cook Counseling Center

Outdoor Adventures in the New River Valley

This presentation will outline the opportunities for recreation in areas close to Virginia Tech.  Discussion items will include: where to go, how to get there, equipment needed, where to get information/maps/equipment, and trip planning skills.

Stress management by PAL's  

The college environment presents students with a variety of stressful situations, many of which they have not had to deal with previously. While some students have developed adequate coping skills, many have not. Virginia Tech undergraduate students trained as Peer Assistants for Learning (PALs) are available to present a program that teaches stress management techniques, including easily learned strategies for relaxation.

What's Counseling All About? An Overview of Cook Counseling Center and Its Services

This session gives an overview of Cook Counseling Center services and discusses student concerns that may be helped with counseling. Topics include how to make an appointment, confidentiality, and what actually happens in individual and group counseling sessions. Students are introduced to the Peer Assistance for Learning (PALs) program, which is a volunteer opportunity for interested undergraduates.
