2007 Division of Student Affairs Employee Awards Recipients

Congratulations are to be extended to the following award recipients:

The Residence Life Department for winning the Campus Community Award. Every Virginia Tech student that lives on campus is touched by Residence Life in some manner. The Residence Life staff provides welcoming and supportive living and learning environments for more than 9,000 students. The Campus Community Award is presented to an individual or group that promotes the development of community, they also demonstrate compassion and respect for others, celebrate diversity, and live and work by the Virginia Tech Principles of Community.

The Career Services Department for winning the Program Award.  Career services partnered with 12 employer sponsors who donated financial support or door prizes and sent representatives to assist with the 2006 Tailgate Party event.  The event was a huge success because of the creativity and dedication of all Career Services staff members who planned and executed the program. It was so successful that they’re planning to hold the event again in the future. The Program Award is given to an individual or group of employees that plan and execute an outstanding program in addition, they engage students in active learning, contribute to the 1st year experience, and promote community service and citizenship.

The Wound Care Clinic of the Schiffert Health Center for winning the Service Award.  Specifically congratulations are in order for Myra Badger, RN; Kirsten Simpkins, RN; Angie Amos, LPN; Drema Anderson, LPN; Senora Butler, LPN; Irene Butterfield, RN; Joy Goad, LPN; Kim Moyer, LPN; and Tammy Olinger, RN. The medical clinic nurses at the Schiffert Health Center started the Nurse Wound Care Clinic for Virginia Tech students nearly two years ago. This nursing service is responsible for assessing, implementing, and continuously evaluating patient wounds. The nurses work with each student they see to educate them in the skills of self-care and wellness and prepare them to be effective health consumers. This award is given to an individual or group of employees that are dedicated to providing high quality service to students and contributes to service needed for students to function successfully.

Laurie Schmidt, a Wellness Health Educator in the Schiffert Health Center, was given the Partnership Award for all she has contributed to Virginia Tech as a health educator. Laurie is responsible for supervising student peer educators, creating health workshops and wellness promotions, conducting health counseling sessions, and teaching university classes. Under her supervision the peer education programs has grown to be a model for other universities and colleges. In addition to her collaboration with Recreational Sports, Laurie also has partnered with counseling services, the international center, greek life, housing and dining, judicial affairs and others. The Partnership Award is given to an individual or group of employees that succeeds with a collaborative effort or partnership across the division, in addition, the recipient also forges educational partnerships that advance student learning, serves as an ambassador for the division, and utilizes resources to achieve institutional missions and goals.
