Wes Williams

Prepare for a life of COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP

Wes WilliamsAs a scholar, advocate, and entrepreneur, Wes Williams has charted his own unique course. Start with his innovative approach to his undergraduate career. Wes is a junior double majoring in Applied Economic Management in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Narrative Justice, a curriculum which he is designing. He is minoring in Classical Languages. He supplemented his education by completing a course on intermediate microeconomics through the prestigious London School of Economics. He has traveled extensively for intellectual, personal, and spiritual growth.

Wes used his programming and entrepreneurial skills to create AboliShop to mobilize consumers against human trafficking, and was awarded first place in the USAID C-TIP Campus Challenge. This resulted in his professional work with the Department of State’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, where he researches corporations and faith-based responses to trafficking issues. He is now working in South Africa to provide more ways for the South African people to speak up when they see something that might indicate human trafficking.

Wes said, “In the past two years, I have begun to learn what it means to lead, how to take responsibility and to trust that the direction I feel called toward is also a direction worth bringing others to. Knowing that my work is opening doors by which others are now able to join in this movement is something I am very proud of.”

His nominator wrote, “It takes courage to engage in the issues, advocacy, and the entrepreneurship that Wes has undertaken as a student at Virginia Tech. Not only is he willing to advocate for others, he is willing to discuss his own vulnerabilities and limitations as a person ready to help others yet also steeped in first world discourses about advocacy and humanitarian aid. This sense of humility and tireless curiosity about the intellectual, academic, and material ways to positively impact individuals and communities reflects his courage.”

Saying that his faith undergirds everything he does, Wes describes his future plans as “working at the intersection of technological innovation, social justice, and narratives in a way that serves the public.” He went on to say, “My guess is that I can't even dream what sort of position that might be just yet — but I look forward to finding out!”

I am pleased to present the Aspire! Award for COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP to Wes Williams.
