Ashley Taylor

Commit to unwavering CURIOSITY

Ashley TaylorYou may have seen the recent headline:

STUDENT TEAM CREATES BREATHING DEVICE FOR NEWBORNS IN UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES

The article goes on to tell the story of five Virginia Tech mechanical engineering students who are designing an infant resuscitator to help newborns in Malawi. The device is ingeniously designed to use parts readily available in local hardware stores, so it is easily fixable. It could also be used in areas hit by a natural disaster, since it operates independent of electricity.

The month-long research trip to sub-Saharan Africa last summer was the opportunity of a lifetime for Ashley Taylor, who is part of that team. She said the people of Malawi renewed her passion for basic human rights. Ashley said, “I believe that there are certain rights that every human being inherently deserves— rights that poverty tends to strip away. I am most passionate about the inherent worth of every human being. I believe that each of us is here on purpose and for a purpose, and I think we all need to be reminded of that. Every human being is entitled to basic rights, and I believe we should all work to ensure that these rights are met for all people.”

Ashley will graduate this spring with a bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, and will remain in Blacksburg for a master’s degree, also in Mechanical Engineering. She is also triple minoring in music, leadership and social change, and “Scieneering.” Through the Scieneering Program, she has conducted research in the early detection and intervention of cerebral palsy in infants.

One of her nominators said, “Over more than 30 years in academia, I have interacted with a broad spectrum of young minds. Often we see those students with the spotless academic records and stellar exams scores win these fellowships and it’s understandable. Then there are those students like Ashley. Ashley just makes a difference. I have no idea what Ashley’s grades are and it makes no difference. Ashley attacks each engineering problem with the excitement of a child on Christmas morning.”

Ashley is the undergraduate advisory member of the Student Engineers' Council, she volunteers for Special Olympics Virginia, is a note-taker with Services for Students with Disabilities, and participates in The Big Event and Stop Hunger Now.

Ashley’s philosophy is this: “Look for the best—in yourself, in people around you, and in our world. Optimism gives life and energy to our world—it simply could not be more important. We must never stop trying to make the glass half full.”

She went on to say, “I think it’s incredibly important for us to never stop questioning—to always keep questioning how we can improve our world. I am especially thankful to the faculty of Virginia Tech and my peers who have encouraged me to keep questioning.”

Ashley’s bright and questing mind united with her care and concern for others is an unbeatable combination.

It is a pleasure to present the Aspire! Award for CURIOSITY to Ashley Taylor.
