Pursue SELF-UNDERSTANDING and INTEGRITY
Kaleigh Leal had been in her sorority, Delta Gamma, for less than a year when she was elected president as a sophomore.
Her nominator said, "Kaleigh inherited an organization that faced many policy violation allegations and was steeped in outdated traditions and unhealthy behavior. She made it her personal priority to oversee a change in direction for the women she was leading. In situations that would have haunted many, Kaleigh faced with courage and integrity."
Making decisions against the status quo risks friendships, reputations, and comfort, but Kaleigh understands that integrity is built upon doing what you say you will do. Her nominator said, "The most impressive quality that Kaleigh possesses is her ability to make decisions from a place of passion and hope rather than from fear of retribution or consequence. It has been necessary for her to make difficult, often unpopular decisions that have already improved the experience of members in her organization."
Her integrity was recognized by Delta Gamma's executive office through the Courage Award, presented for standing up to bystander behavior and demonstrating social responsibility.
As her tenure as president of her organization comes to a close at the end of the year, Kaleigh reflects on the personal growth she's had in the role. She understands her own talents and values and, because of that, is able to lead others to a reflective understanding of themselves. Through this leadership approach, Kaleigh has taken a struggling organization and given it a promising future.
She has added multiple new advisors, implemented values-based programs, and enhanced a team responsible for revamping the member experience in her sorority in her term as president.
Her influence transcends Fraternity and Sorority Life, as she has served as a team leader for Relay for Life for two years and was the director of marketing and social media on the Slusher Hall Counsel.
She was recently elected Panhellenic President for this coming year. In this role, she will lead twelve sororities toward a better Greek Life experience for all. She is pursuing a degree in Public Relations with a minor in Environmental Science and Business Leadership and plans to graduate in May of 2016.
For her brave leadership and unwavering commitment to her values, I am pleased to award Kaleigh Leal with the Aspire! Award for SELF-UNDERSTANDING AND INTEGRITY.
