Jordan Evans

Practice CIVILITY

jordanevans.jpg There’s a theme that’s evident in all Jordan Evans says and does: he loves his people.

He said, “For my whole life, I’ve been surrounded by so many selfless individuals who have done nothing but support me, challenge me, and inspire me to be the best person I can be.”

Following their example, Jordan is leaving a legacy at Virginia Tech that supports, challenges, and inspires those around him.

His nominator said, “Jordan finds a way to highlight the positives in any suggestion or idea and works to help lead others to fine tune their concepts in a respectful and encouraging way, fostering development and respect for all.”

Speaking of development, Jordan’s top strength is—you guessed it—developer. Between his academics and activities inside and outside the classroom, Jordan showcases his civility seamlessly. Of the organizations he’s involved in, Jordan is the leader of one, an assistant leader of another, and a participant in the third. In all three roles, Jordan’s character remains the same—he is thoughtful, kind, respectful, and inclusive, whether he’s leading or following.

In 2015, he served as the Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternity. He currently serves as the assistant student campus minister for the Newman Catholic Community. A passionate sports enthusiast, Jordan plays intramural sports, as well.

His nominator said, “Jordan has a thread of consciousness that runs through everything he does. He’s the same person and has the same respect, concern, and values whether he is leading a meeting or play flag football on the intramural fields.”

A university honors student, Jordan is studying mechanical engineering with a minor in biomedical engineering. Currently, he serves as the teaching assistant in a thermodynamics course.

Jordan said, “I have always enjoyed the challenge that teaching brings, and being able to share my understanding with others is really rewarding. I try to learn the names of all the students who come to my office hours for help and try to get to know them, which I have definitely enjoyed.”

Jordan said, “I think the biggest thing that I've learned is to not overlook the little things. It’s easy to get caught up in the big picture things in college, but the things that I will treasure the most are the little things that I made time for, in the chance encounters that sparked friendships and in some ways changed my life.”

But what Jordan is referring to as little are the things that culminate to make his embrace of civility a very, very big thing.

Jordan said, “My Keystone Experience has been striving to make the most out of every moment. Whether that be in an academic class, or in a brief encounter with someone else, on a daily basis, there are always opportunities for you to serve others, to courageously challenge and inspire, to gain a deeper understanding, to learn more about yourself, and to be present to those around us in our community. We truly live our Keystone Experience by striving to recognize and embrace those opportunities to grow.”

Jordan, for that thread of consciousness that’s so very evident in all you do, for you unyielding love and care for those around you, and for the Keystone Experience you are creating at Virginia Tech, I’m honored to present you with the Aspire! Award for CIVILITY.
