Jacob Rosenthal

Commit to unwavering CURIOSITY

Jacob Rosenthal

In a recent scholarship application, Jake Rosenthal wrote, “It is tremendously shortsighted to forgo an entire scientific frontier because it will not change the world in an instant... We must look at other worlds to understand our own; we must examine the big picture if we are to understand our place in it.”

If that’s not a metaphor for life, I don’t know what is.

Jake chose the least tapped and most fascinating subject to be curious about—space.

He said, “In a world increasingly reliant on science and technology, an advanced scientific literacy of the coming generations is crucial; they must have the tools and the will to press forth our greatest venture yet—into the cosmos.”

A sophomore studying aerospace engineering, Jake interned with NASA the last two summers and has plans to continue his work.

He said, “My most distant hope is to write and host a science television series.”

In the last year, he has given more than 20 presentations to high school and college students regarding topics such as space, space exploration, and STEM education. He is also a guest blogger for The Planetary Society. Jake puts forth all of these efforts to, in his words, “evoke passion, catalyze wonder, inspire awe in the public, and to galvanize the people of the world to support the exploration of our universe—and, in my greatest hopes, join it.”

But it’s not just the universe that Jake cares about. He has taught a form of Israeli self-defense called Krav Maga and served as an executive board member of Hillel last year. He first attended a leadership retreat with the organization last year, and he offered to lead a session on Krav Maga.

At that retreat, Jake also led a session regarding his philosophy of how the world started, incorporating his knowledge of the skies and stars. His nominator noted that the other attendees were confused that a first-year student had such vast knowledge of these difficult subjects.

Jake responded, “When I’m interested in something, I read about it and then teach myself about the subject more deeply. I look to mentors and reach out to them.”

His nominator said, “He exemplifies that there is no failure except an idea or question left unexplored. Jake speaks of his mentors often and explains how their expertise guides his curiosity and passion to learn and develop his intellect. His whole life is about inspiring others to lead lives of curiosity, always asking questions, studying, and looking for the answers to his myriad of questions about the world. He is a student who seeks to instill the value that learning is the common essential element for intellectual development, discovery, and engagement.”

For his undeniable passion for learning, his aspirations to explore the world, and his desire to bring others along for the ride, I’m honored to present the Aspire! Award for CURIOSITY to Jake Rosenthal.
