Justin Graves

Embrace UT PROSIM as a way of life

Justin GravesEven if you have never met Justin Graves, you probably know him by sight. One of the most visible individuals at Virginia Tech, Justin is as close as we come to having a "campus celebrity." As a freshman, Justin became a Hokie ambassador. Four years later, he is president of the Hokie ambassadors, and it is not uncommon to see Justin maneuvering his wheelchair -- backwards -- to give prospective Hokies their first tour of campus. He said, "It makes me feel as if I've come full circle. It is exciting and rewarding to help people make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives. I want to give others that same opportunity to attend our beautiful university and understand that life is all about what you have done for other people in a positive way."

But there is more to it than that. Justin sees the tours as a great way to inspire people, to make them think, "If he can do it, so can I." Justin sums up his philosophy succinctly: "You think I can't do that? Watch me! Give yourself a shot!"

Diagnosed with a rare spinal inflammation condition as a child, doctors predicted Justin would not live past age eight. Justin said, "I'm still here, I'm still thriving. Coming to college, excelling academically, and experiencing the things that made me an individual among 30 thousand – those things allowed me to define who I am for others, how I help them, and how I serve them."

Justin is a senior, majoring in sociology, with a concentration in social inequality. He has four minors: leadership and social change, business leadership, public and urban affairs, and political science. He is public editor of The Collegiate Times, serves on the university council and the commission of equal opportunity and diversity, and is director of equity, diversity, and inclusion for the SGA.

He has managed to bring all these interests together for one goal: helping others. In his internship in leadership and social change, he is examining the embodiments of non-traditional leadership in multicultural and under-represented students. As a Diversity Scholar, Justin received a grant to research and develop accessibility, assistive technology, and accommodations for disabled students. It is an area he has also pursued through his work with the College Bound summer camp program for mentally and physically challenged prospective college students. He is now in his fifth year working with the Department of Homeland Security, where, among other duties, he worked with the Office of Accessible Systems and Technology to give more people the ability to work in the Federal government.

For his determination, optimism, and energy; for his contagious enthusiasm and fresh ideas; for giving as much of himself as he can to make a lasting impact on this university; and for inspiring us all, Justin Graves is presented the Aspire! Award for Ut Prosim.
