Commit to unwavering CURIOSITY
Esther Moon didn't think she'd get into Virginia Tech when she applied during her senior year of high school. She wasn't confident in her grades, and she knew she'd have to pay her way through school.
Now, as she approaches graduation after only three years, her impact on the university is vast. She'll receive her bachelor's in Biological Sciences and leave a legacy of service, curiosity, enthusiasm, and commitment, as she's jumped in to all Virginia Tech has to offer.
Her nominator said, "She is an overachiever, independent, and lives a life of humility. She works to pay for college, leads a ministry, and maintains her grades. The weirdest thing is that she never complains, nor does she stop showing her beautiful smile."
Esther is working her way through college, as a server at Texas Roadhouse during the summer and a lab technician during the school year.
Curiosity drives all she does, as she said, "I just want to experience everything!" She volunteers as an undergraduate researcher at the Corporate Research Center, at a local hospice facility, and with the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad. She also spent more than 100 hours this past year shadowing professionals in the medical field to explore all the different options available when she leaves Virginia Tech in the spring.
The highlight of her college experience was getting involved with Cornerstone Christian Fellowship, where she has taken part in and served the community since her first year in Blacksburg. She said, "I learned about leadership, communication, and other skills that can't be taught in the classroom that have helped shape the person I am." She's also a loyal member of Gamma Beta Phi, a service and honor society.
Esther says that her passion is to live life to the fullest. She said, "That means not letting anything limit who I am, who I can be, and what I can do. Nothing can prevent me from doing the things I want, unless I let it. Possibilities are endless and life is meant for us to step out of our comfort zones. Let your curiosity expand who you are because it will allow you to expand not only your interests but your ability to influence others."
She serves as the treasurer of the Foundation for International Medical Relief and hopes to one-day travel to a third-world country to provide primary care to those in need.
Esther dreams of starting a free clinic in the inner city of D.C. for families experiencing financial hardships and domestic violence.
For her tenacious desire to keep learning more, her dedication to serving others, and her strong work ethic in all she does, I am pleased to present the Aspire! Award for CURIOSITY to Esther Moon.
