Naomi Dam

Commit to unwavering CURIOSITY

Naomi DamNaomi Dam is that rare person who is able to take a variety of perspectives and turn them into positive action. Her nominator wrote, "Naomi is always searching for new points of view to compare and contrast with her own, in order to better herself not only as a student leader, but as a contributing member of society."

As a freshman, Naomi was enthusiastic about getting involved on campus, so she attended meetings for a variety of student organizations that interested her. Her early involvement in the International Relations Organization, the Vietnamese Student Association, the Virginia Tech Union, and even the Fencing Club, have gifted her with a broad range of commitments today. Now a senior, she is president of the Asian American Student Union and speaker of the house for the Student Government Association.

Passionate about helping the Asian American community and improving the student life experience, Naomi is always eager to gain insights into the history, heritage, and interests of the people she meets. She said they help her to develop an awareness of the beautiful diversity that exists in the world. She said, "I am so grateful to have met all of these individuals who have influenced me to be a more respectful and compassionate person. Through my experiences, I have developed the mindset that I must challenge myself and take advantage of any opportunity that arises, because there is always a new lesson to be learned from going to an event or trying something new. I would encourage others to be eager to learn, to challenge themselves, and to welcome change and different perspectives."

Naomi is a dean's list student who will graduate in May with a double major in international studies and Spanish. Her interest in informing the student body so that they may care and be respectful of diversity has led her to serve on the commission on student affairs, the commission on undergraduate studies and policies, and the commission on outreach and international affairs. She was awarded an Undergraduate Research Institute grant for a study comparing the values of Appalachian families to Southeast Asian-American families, and presented her research at the 2009 Appalachian Studies Association Conference.

Naomi said that everything she has learned at Virginia Tech is guiding her towards a career with the federal government or a non-profit organization, so that she can make positive contributions to many areas of the world. She would like to do humanitarian aid work and help impoverished communities in developing countries. She would also like to give back to Tech and the surrounding community by one day working for the university.

For the immense curiosity that she has transformed into a positive force for change and awareness on the Virginia Tech campus, the Aspire! Award for curiosity is presented to Naomi Dam.
