Brent Ashley

Embrace UT PROSIM as a way of life

Brent Ashley Brent Ashley could easily have ended up in an Ivy League university, but a visit to Virginia Tech convinced him that he wanted to attend a university that has a strong service ethos. Brent is a quintessential servant leader, and he has chosen to live his life on-campus to manifest our university motto. Brent knows, in deep and profound ways, that his life is intended to serve others. He has come to understand that Ut Prosim is not simply about service projects or participating in service-learning activities. Rather, it is about knowing that one’s life is designed to be of service to others. This is how he leads and lives.

Brent is a courageous leader. He always does the right thing, even when people aren’t looking and he speaks up and speaks out for those in the margins. He is a man of integrity and his word is his honor. He is fair and thoughtful and well-regarded by his peers, faculty, and administrators. It is not always easy for students to be regarded so favorably by colleagues at all levels, in many different corners of the university. I believe it is because he is so thoughtful and respectful. There is a congruency and consistency in how he leads—always with an ethic of care and fairness. Brent has qualities that one cannot always teach another—qualities that come from within and over a lifetime make a person special. This bright and motivated man is a natural and ethical leader.

Brent says one of the highlights of his college career is the time he spent in Senegal. There, he worked with other Virginia Tech students from a variety of disciplines to evaluate Senegalese villages and help them adopt sustainable practices. He said, “It was an eye-opening experience and helped me realize that service defines who I am. It and the other experiences I have had at Virginia Tech have broadened my view of what life has to offer and helped me grow into who I am. It’s all about what kind of difference you can make.”

His service and leadership in SGA is unparalleled. As SGA president this year, Brent led the effort to get an on-campus voting precinct. Among his many activities, he was involved with the Interfraternity Council, is a founding member of the Farm House fraternity, worked closely with the VTPD, supported Relay For Life, has helped to lead his state fair, and has held the title of Delaware's Grand Champion Showman for Dairy Cattle.

Brent has also distinguished himself academically. He fully engages the learning process as an active participant. He has insatiable curiosity, he is committed to life-long learning, and values the life of the mind. He has engaged in many research projects, he is recipient of the Ray Cragle Scholarship, and is a member of the Alpha Zeta and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies.

With a double majoring in Animal and Poultry Sciences and dairy science and a minor in political science, Brent could go in any number of directions when he graduates in May. His plans include law school. Then he would like to get into government work, where he can serve the community in an official capacity. He doesn’t rule out coming back to work at Virginia Tech someday. Brent, we would welcome you back with open arms. You are an extraordinary leader, and you have become an integral part of our work in Student Affairs.

I am honored to present the Aspire! Award for embracing UT PROSIM as a way of life to Brent Ashley.
