Prepare for a life of COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP
In a letter he wrote to the new cadet class of 2018, Andrew George said, "I applaud you for choosing a path less traveled. Many generations have walked the same path you will. Their legacy is alive within this institution. Never forget why you chose to join the Corps of Cadets or lose sight of your end goal. You are about to embark in a new chapter of your life. You've chosen wisely. Let's go. Ut Prosim."
Listening to his own instruction, Cadet Colonel and Regimental Commander Andrew George not only chose the path less traveled, but he walks ahead, leading the corps in character, discipline, and integrity.
As Cadet Battalion Sergeant Major, Andrew is among the top three cadets in charge of a 380-cadet unit. He leads his battalion in all daily operations and administrative duties, ranging from cleaning the barracks, leading physical training, and mentoring future leaders.
He shared that he's most proud when he sees a cadet perform at a higher caliber than he did at that stage. Andrew said, "We do all we can to pass on our knowledge and experience we have gained in order to ensure the next class does a better job than we ever did. When I can pass on my leadership to another cadet and watch them not only survive but thrive and exceed expectations, it makes me swell with pride."
He represents the corps on Virginia Tech's Commission on Student Affairs, which is tasked with making recommendations to the university that affect student life and morale. A member of the Order of the Gavel, a recipient of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Emerging Leader Scholarship, and honored with the Rotary International "Service Above Self" Award, Andrew is an accomplished and well-rounded student and cadet.
He said, "My passion is the United States Army. I say that without any reservations. The army is the one thing that I have found that I truly enjoy dedicating my time to. I enjoy doing army things, going to training schools, reading professional journals, and finding new ways to make myself a better soldier. This is my niche. I am humbled that I will have the privilege to serve the United States by serving its' sons and daughters."
His nominator said, "Cadet George is a gifted individual with merit and a sincere and genuine care for people around him with a 'serve others' attitude."
Andrew will commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army this coming May, and, he says, "I'll go off to serve where the Army needs me."
For setting an example for others to follow, for humble mentorship, and for dedication to our university and our nation, I am honored to present the Aspire! Award for COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP to Andrew George.
