Samantha Nichole DiBiaso

Pursue SELF-UNDERSTANDING and INTEGRITY

Samantha_DiBiaso_72.jpg Samantha DiBiaso’s story is a tale of finding oneself through service to others. Samantha put it this way, “Through service and advocating for others, we can build relationships, understanding, and break down those barriers that divide us. When I am working with others and utilizing all of my strengths, I feel most myself and in my element.”

It all began four years ago at Orientation when she stopped by the living-learning communities table and was convinced to give SERVE a try. Samantha said, “SERVE not only helped me find my home here at Virginia Tech, it cleared a path for me to follow my passions and understand how service connects all of us. SERVE became my safe place, my home away from home, and a place that continues to help me to grow every day.”

Samantha is a natural leader and has been an ambassador for the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, an Orientation Leader, a Peer Career Advisor, active in the Lutheran Campus Ministry, and a VT Engage STEP UP student leader. She has participated in, organized, and led several VT Engage service trips, most recently to the Dominican Republic.

During a three-week service immersion program in Peru last summer, her nominator said, “Sammy provided maturity and leadership in guiding the participants through a time in which many of them were overwhelmed. Sammy guided them through reflections and conversations to understand the differences in culture that we were experiencing. She pushed other students to question their understanding of service and the importance of long-term sustainable partnerships with communities to have impactful change. She was willing to be vulnerable and to allow others to be so.”

Samantha said, “Finding yourself can be scary and challenging, but when you are open to new ideas and experiences, it will always be worthwhile. I want others to be constantly reminded that your strengths make you who you are, and understanding that is the first step to take in moving forward and making change.”

A senior graduating in May, Samantha is double majoring in Public Relations and Religion and Culture, with a minor in Leadership and Social Change. After graduation, she hopes to work for a year immersed in service, either abroad or with AmeriCorps. Beyond that, she sees herself continuing to serve others through nonprofit work, fighting for social justice, and advocacy.

Samantha said, “Four years ago, I would have never expected to be who I am, and where I am headed today. I was okay with settling, accepted social norms, and avoided challenging things that I thought were wrong. Now, I don’t think twice about making changes, challenges, and opening myself beyond my comfort zone. I am so grateful to have been given so many opportunities at Virginia Tech to grow and find my true self. Growth can be difficult, but in the end worthwhile.”

For taking the time and care to help others along the journey of self-discovery, I am pleased to present the Aspire! Award for SELF-UNDERSTANDING AND INTEGRITY to Samantha DiBiaso.
