David Gardner

Prepare for a life of COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP

DavidGardner.jpg David Gardner had a great first year at Virginia Tech. It was hard—he was a freshman cadet, so we expect no less. But, in what he says was “probably the best accident that has ever happened,” David checked the wrong box on his admissions paperwork and was signed up to be a member of the Highty-Tighties. He hadn’t played the trumpet in many, many years, but he learned. He was thriving, had great friends, and was well on his way to a career in the Air Force.

But something changed sophomore year, and things started going downhill. His grades were falling, his relationships were struggling, and David felt like life was spiraling out of control. Though he’d planned his summer around attending field training that year, he got a call at the end of the semester informing him that the Air Force ROTC unit had dis-enrolled him as an Air Force cadet.

He was relocated to another company within the corps, changed his major, and began to slowly rebuild what was broken. David said that the change was slow, but he was changing, and that was what mattered.

In the spring of his junior year, David was named a squad leader and entrusted with the leadership of six cadets. One of the cadets in his squad was struggling, and David took the opportunity to share his story with this cadet. It lined up with what the cadet was going through, the cadet saw hope in David’s journey, and David realized that he could use his hardships for good.

David said, “That was my first stepping stone forward. I was able to help others. I was happy for the first time in a while.”

Currently, David serves as a platoon leader for his company and as the Regimental Counsel for the Cadet Honor Court. One of his nominators – and there were three -- said, “Both of these positions have significant responsibility and demonstrate the true change in attitude and performance that David has made over the past two years.”

Another nominator said, “David is a role model for each and every person under his command and someone that people know to reach out to. He inspires people to get out of their own way and move forward past whatever hurdle life is throwing at them. He has committed himself to the betterment of the Corps of Cadets and every person he comes into contact with.”

A criminology major, David plans to work in law enforcement following graduation this spring.

David, courageous leadership means more than overcoming obstacles. It means using what was meant to break you for the betterment of those around you. It means humbly taking responsibility for your actions, encouraging others to do the same, and discovering that telling your story can change the stories of your peers. I’m honored to present the Aspire! Award for COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP to David Gardner.
